Game Ranger Training at Shamwari Game Reserve
Filed Under Sports And Fitness | Comments Off
Mark Bottell asked:
So you’ve always wanted to become a game ranger but feel that the opportunities in England are somewhat limited? Then why not take a gap year in South Africa and learn from the experts at Shamwari Game Reserve.
Training as a game ranger may sound like a particularly exotic way to spend time out from work or university, but the course offered at the world-renowned Shamwari Game Reserve isn’t just a brief insight into some of the roles and responsibilities that becoming a game ranger entails. No, this course is the real deal and your course mates are just as likely to be currently working part time in some capacity on an African game reserve as they are to be English students taking a gap year in South Africa.
You may think that game ranger training simply involves learning about the various animal footprints that you need to point out to a group of excitable American tourists, but the course is a lot more in-depth than that. Becoming a game ranger involves passing the standard FGASA examination. However, before students can qualify for this certificate they need to take a course in off-road driving, which means that holding a driving licence is an essential requirement. Rangers must also undertake an extensive first-aid examination which covers everything from snake bites wounds, to bone fractures and resuscitation methods.
The course offered at Shamwari Game Reserve is typically six weeks long and students can expect to learn about everything from the botany and biomes of South Africa to historical human habitation and hospitality management. The becoming a game ranger course covers everything from astronomy to zoology and due to the hands on nature of the FGASA course you can expect to spend many an evening camping out under the stars whilst tracking lions or observing the various stars which make up the Milky Way.
Whilst studying at Shamwari Game Reserve you can opt to mix your game ranger training course with a number of community or conservation based programmes. These can be incredibly rewarding and a great way to give something back to the local population. Shamwari offers a number of these projects and you can spend your gap year in South Africa learning the skills needed to become a game ranger whilst at the same time off-setting your carbon footprint by planting trees in the local nursery or teaching ball skills to the children in a nearby AIDS orphanage.
One of the highlights of the course is attending game drives and spotting South Africa’s indigenous animals in their natural habitat. Shamwari Game Reserve is one of the premier game reserves in the Eastern Cape and you can expect to spot everything from lions lazing after a kill to hippos basking on the banks of the river. Due to the nature of working on a game reserve you will often find that your class schedule is interrupted. It is certainly common for a class to be cancelled half-way through so that you can watch a lion kill or visit some newborn cheetah cubs. One thing which you will soon discover about game ranger training is that no two days are exactly the same.

Recommended Chainsaws For You
Filed Under Sports And Fitness | Comments Off
David H. Urmann asked:
Chainsaws come in different types and sizes. Choose the right chainsaw for your workload.
A chainsaw is a movable, mechanical and motorized saw mostly used in logging activities. It is used in place of axes and manual saws to cut big and heavy logs more easily. Newer and better chainsaws are being developed and specialized, depending on the job that needs to be done.
Based on popular opinion, the lighter the chainsaw, the more powerful and durable it is, and easier to maneuver. Manufactures hear this. They use newer and lighter materials in their production.
Here are eight suggestions of small chainsaws. Almost all these chainsaws have 14″ and 16″ guided bars. They are the more affordable lot, ranging from $180 to $400.
The dolmar small chainsaws can transform logging to arbor power. The echo small chainsaws are good for limbing and trimming works. The husqvarna small chainsaw is a small powerhouse but is very handy. The craftsman small chainsaw is economical and with dependable quality.
The jonsered small chainsaw is available in only 16″ guide bars, reliable and durable. The RedMax small chainsaws is also available in only 16″ guide bars. The solo small chainsaw is also very powerful. And the stihl small chainsaw can cut smoothly without sacrificing power and durability.
There are many other recommended chainsaws. One is the homelite ranger. Many people say that this engine outperforms its range price. This has become the best choice for all home owners. It has safety features to lessen accidents at work. One important feature is the anti-vibration to protect the nerves in your arms. Another one is its ability to control kickbacks, and thereby less strenuous to the arms and legs.Chain tension can be adjusted by a ***** driver.
The craftsman 34118 is way cheaper than any electric chainsaw. One of its more prominent features is the anti-vibrating handle, making the machine easier to handle. The tension can be easily adjusted according to the workload. It also has a quick brake to prevent accidents, and convenient chain oiling. However, one setback is its noise. It produces loud cracking sounds that can be irritating for some users.
The Stilhl MS 180 C-BE is recommended for easy, fast and smooth cutting. It is convenient and safe to use also. The bar tapers prevent kickbacks.
Also try the Husqvarna 316. This machine is very quiet, producing very minimal sounds in operation. It also needs less maintenance. The power cable extends to 100 feet at least, making it more maneuverable and mobile. It cuts faster than an electric chainsaw also. It has a safety measure of automatic chain break and an anti-vibration handle.
Another one worth trying is the Black and Decker CCS818. The best thing about this machine is its cordless feature. It can therefore be taken in any workplace. It runs on battery, and the runtime is very sufficient for every full charging. Although, it is less powerful compared to other models, it is enough for light workloads like cutting small branches or trimming trees. It also performs quietly.
There are a lot more chainsaws available in the market. The ones mentioned here are just some of the best chainsaws used by many people. Depending on your work, choose carefully among the prominent features of chainsaws.

Texas Rangers, A Challenging Course
Filed Under Sports And Fitness | Comments Off
Rick Grantham asked:
When you hear the word rangers, the first thing that comes to your mind is the people responsible for keeping everyone safe back in the days. The rangers have played a significant role in the history of Texas. Stephen Austin formed the rangers in 1823. It temporarily ended after the Civil War. However, it lived again shortly after the reconstruction era. From 1935, they became part of the Texas Department of Public safety.
Another famous Texas Rangers is the major league baseball team in Arlington, Texas. The team became a part of the American League in 1961. They were formally known as the as the Washington Senators. The team is different from the original Washington Senators who moved to Minnesota. They are an expansion team since the first Washington team just changed their name to Minnesota Twins and not their stat. They became the Rangers after they transferred at Arlington in 1972.
Replacing the first Washington team was a challenge. The team had difficulty because of mismanagement. The owners experienced financial losses in their first few years of inception. Bob Short bought the team from James Lemon who also became the general manager of the team. Short hired a Hall of Famer in the person of Ted Williams.
Williams managed to make improvements in the performance of the team. However, business got in the way. Financial problems led to the trading of valuable players to other teams. Because of this, the winning season that Williams tried to managed eventually stopped. After the approval of the American League, the team moved to Texas. Leaving Washington was not easy though. Fans were furious about the decision.
When they moved to Texas, the team officially became the Rangers. It took a while before they have fully adjusted to their new home. Billy Martin managed the team. In 1974, he received the Manager of the year award after leading the team to second place, behind the Oakland Athletics who won the World Series that year.
The league recognized several players of the Texas Rangers that year too. Their first baseman Mike Hargrove won the Rookie of the year award. Jeff Burroughs won the Most Valuable Player award as well. In addition, Hall of Famer, Ferguson Jenkins received the Comeback Player of the Year.
However, this did not last. The ensuing year was nowhere near their 1974 season. This led to the firing of Martin.
The team will not have a winning season until 1977 to 1979. After that, they went to winning hiatus again. They would only experience their next winning season in 1986. However, it was in the late nineties that they would experience the prime of their team. It was not enough to give them the stature they want though.
The Rangers are one of the least successful teams in the American League. Their highest achievement would be their three West Division titles in 1996, 1998, and 1999. They have not won an American League pennant. Consequently, they have never appeared in the World Series as well.

To reach full potential, any athlete needs mental toughness. That’s a combination of mental, emotional and physical toughness. How do you achieve that? You need to get out of your comfort zone and regularly expose yourself to difficulties that stretch your limits. Pride yourself on being able to handle tough circumstances, without whining or feeling self-pity. Top athletes are great role models for this. Who else can we learn this from? Right. Military people. They are all about mental toughness.
SIX MILITARY SPECIAL FORCES MIND STRATEGIES?
United States Army Ranger training is one of the toughest special forces military programs on the planet. Mind skills are as important as physical and soldering skills. All but the toughest wash out. About 60% of all applicants fail during indoctrination. This failure rate is purposefully designed into the initiatives to weed out all but the very toughest and best people. Attendees who graduate have the confidence and mental toughness of knowing they passed through the virtual gates of torture and lived. How many of these Ranger mind tools do you possess?
1. Rangers train to expect the unexpected. Do you love unpredictability or are you a creature of habit who gets thrown off-balance with every change of wind?
2. Rangers train against enemy capture exploitation and political indoctrination tactics. Do you have a plan for handling workplace politics?
3. Rangers are the only military unit that mandates physical training five days a week, 48 weeks a year. Are you making yourself fit to do battle in the workplace?
4. Rangers are trained to believe that there is more than one way to do almost anything. Are you a flexible and adaptable thinker?
5. Rangers must be ready to deploy anywhere in the world on 18-hours notice. Do you maintain a ready state of mind for any eventuality?
6. Rangers are expert at infiltrating by air, sea or land into any kind of terrain, under any type of condition. Do you consider yourself well-rounded in your tactics and abilities?

2006 Texas Rangers Preview
Filed Under Sports And Fitness | Comments Off
Jack Scrafford asked:
2005 Overview:
Buck Showalter’s 2005 Rangers ended up the season with a disappointing 79-83 record despite having one of the better lineups in baseball. What made the 2005 season particularly disappointing was the fact the 2004 team ended the season with 89 wins and one of the most impressive home records in baseball. In 2004, the Rangers won 51 home games which ranked 4th overall in the American League, while in 2005 Texas managed only to win 44, ending the season 16 games behind the AL West Angels.
Texas fielded one of the best offensive infields in 2005. 1st baseman Mark Teixeira (.301 43 144) continued to develop his swing, playing in all of the Rangers 162 games in 2005. 2nd baseman Alfonso Soriano (.268 36 104) also proved durable playing in 156 games by finishing 2nd on the team in HRs behind Teixeria. Shortstop Michael Young (.334 24 91), 3rd baseman Hank Blalock (.263 25 92) and outfielders David Dellucci (.251 29 65) and Kevin Mench (.264 25 73) also helped to contribute runs to the potent offensive lineup.
Starting pitcher Kenny Rogers (14-8 3.46) slipped from his 18 wins in 2004 posting a 14 win season to led all starters. Youngster Chris Young (12-7 4.34 showed promise in 2005 appearing in 31 games, while newly acquired starter Chan Ho Park (8-5 5.66) managed to post an 8-3 record before being traded to the Padres in August. Closer Francisco Cordero (3-1 3.39 37 saves) anchored the relief pitching while pitching an impressive 2-0 2.59 with 17 saves after the all star break.
Off Season Moves:
The Rangers had a busy off season losing Rogers via free agency and trading Soriano in a 4-player deal with the Washington Nationals. Texas also picked up Vicente Padilla (9-12 4.71) from the Phillies in exchange for RHP Ricardo Rodriguez. Soriano was sent to the Nationals for Brad Wilkerson (.248 11 57) while Texas also acquired free agent pitcher Kevin Millwood (9-11 2.86). The Rangers also completed a 6-player deal with the Padres which netted relief pitcher Akinori Otsuka (2-8 3.59) and starter Adam Eaton (11-5 4.57). Pitcher John Wasdin (3-2 4.28) was also resigned via free agency.
2006 Analysis:
New pitching coach Mark Connor has an arsenal of new arms to improve upon the team’s 4.97 ERA in 2005. Texas continues to lack any “ace” as Rogers departure will prove difficult to replace. Millwood is a nice acquisition as is Padilla, although both posted sub-500 seasons in 2005. Eaton should fit nicely into the rotation and is a reliable arm. Look for Otsuka to stabilize the bullpen. Retaining the services of relief pitcher John Wasdin was also a wise move. The Rangers will certainly miss Soriano’s bat in the lineup and hope Brad Wilkerson can return to his 2004 form when he was able to hit 32 HRS - before the Nationals changed their location to Washington. There are many new faces on the Rangers roster, but a lack of quality starters most likely will land them in the same position as 2005.

Glasgow and the Beautiful Game of Football

Gavin Cooper asked:
Glasgow has developed over many years, an almost limitless obsession with Football, and although it is not loved by everyone it certainly has like anywhere else in the world, a devoted following through differing generations. Glasgow Rangers and Glasgow Celtic are, for anyone who might not know, the two main teams in Glasgow and each team respectively have an independent and loyal following from their many fans across the city.
It has been well documented of course that both teams fans are not the best of friends to put it very mildly and there have been violent clashes over the years between the two, but the acceptance of Rangers and Celtic fans of each other in recent years has and continues to increase as time passes and a mutual respect has developed to bring a new air of calm to the cities footballing masses.
An interesting fact of Scottish football is that the first international fixture played between the Scottish and English national teams in Glasgow in 1872 is the oldest fixture in the world and the football rivalry between the two survived until the late seventies but has subsequently dwindled since then although there seems to remain a certain division from North to South.
Scotland’s National stadium, Hampden Park, In the Southside of Glasgow, now world famous was built way back in 1903 and owned the crown of the largest football stadium in the world until 1950 when the Maracana Stadium was built in Rio. In recent years Hampden Park was in desperate need of improvement and after many high profile football tragedies including the horrific Hillsborough disaster on April 15th 1989 the stadium was closed and subsequently overhauled and refurbished completely so that it was fully seated and finally reopened its doors in May 1999.
Hampden Park also houses the Scottish Football Museum, a must see for all the family and a great day out, The museum also houses on display, amongst many other football artefacts, the worlds oldest football ticket from the previously mentioned Scotland and England game, The Scotland hall of fame, and the oldest national trophy dating back to 1873. The stadium is widely used for a variety of other uses including concerts of which there have been many over the years, but the highlight of the stadium is when the football crowds descend upon it for big matches and the intensity of the atmosphere has to be experienced to be fully understood, Hence the description ” The Hampden Roar” that became a popular phrase among Scottish people.
Scottish football may not be a dominating force in regards to world football, but the heart and character of the support it enjoys is truly world class and this is reflected in the warm welcome the fans receive around the world, wherever they travel. And if you come and watch a football game in Glasgow you will receive a very special welcome from the “City of Smiles.” And that welcome alone makes the sport in Glasgow very special.
