Safari At Sabi Sands

Filed Under Destinations | Comments Off

Graeme Coyne asked:

The Sabi Sands Game Reserve, sometimes referred to as part of the “Greater Kruger”, is separated into a number of traversing sections so that the game rangers and trackers of specific safari lodges can take guests onto adjoining properties for game drives.

Game Drives

Open 4×4 vehicles with hop-on seats situated on the front left of the bonnet are used for game drives so that the tracker can scan the bush and dirt roads for signs and “spoor” (tracks) of animals. The tracker is constantly communicating with the ranger who is driving the vehicle and together they lead guests to large and small game.

Rangers who are in the different traversing areas keep in constant radio contact with each other so they can be aware of animal sightings all over the reserve. This allows them to be able to show visitors a vast selection of game as they always know where there is animal activity.

Aside from showing guests the “Big Five”, the knowledgeable rangers also inform guests about the animals’ behaviour, interesting birds and plants and even the night skies.

The wild leopard is an extremely elusive animal and people can often only speak about getting glimpses of this majestic creature. The Sabi Sands Game Reserve is one of the best places in Africa to see leopard, as the cats have become accustomed to the safari vehicles, going about their regular activities allowing guests to observe them for far longer.

What Guests Can Expect
___________________________________________________________________

The day usually begins with an early wake up just before sunrise when guests can either enjoy a hot cup of coffee in their room (or on their private deck), or enjoy fresh, warm croissants, muffins and rusks with other guests on the central deck after which guests depart for the game drive.

The morning game drive usually lasts around three hours. Afterwards guests are taken back to the lodge in time for a leisurely breakfast. Typically, guests then have the choice to go on a guided walk or simply relax until lunchtime.

Guests meet up for tea and cake at around 4pm before leaving for the afternoon game drive. The ranger chooses a scenic or unique location for “sun downer” drinks and some snacks. The game drive carries on after sunset with the use of spotlights so that guests have the opportunity to see nocturnal creatures.

Once back at the lodge guests can enjoy a bath or shower, a hearty dinner and possibly indulge in a nightcap, before going back to their luxury suite to dream about what the next day in the bush might offer.

The lodges at the Sabi Sands Game Reserve do differ in respect to their location, localised game, number of guests accommodated in total, layout and style.

Accommodation

Notten’s Bush Camp is situated in the heart of the private Sabi Sand Game Reserve in Mpumalanga. Notten’s Bush Camp provides guests with a wealth of activities to enjoy. The most exhilarating activities would have to be going on game drives and discovering the African bush on foot with a professional ranger. The lodge is also perfect for bird enthusiasts.

Guests can relish the scrumptious cuisine served at Notten’s Bush Camp during their safari holiday at Sabi Sands as there is a wide mix of international and traditional South African cuisine served either in the Boma (outdoor enclosure) under the beautiful African sky or summer house. There is a large menu providing options for vegetarians as well.

Guests can unwind at the Notten’s Nature Spa with a relaxing beauty treatment and be pampered with a range of treatment options including a number of massages and sports therapies. Massages are also available to guests in their own room or viewing deck. Golf trips to Skukuza Golf Course can also be arranged. The course is only 45 minutes away.

A trip to the Sabi Sands Game Reserve will leave guests with a lifetime of memories, making them want to return to relish more of the magic of the African bush.

A bad choice of flight left me very little time to collect my hired car and race out of Johannesburg city before the afternoon peak traffic congestion. Slipping out just as the congestion started, I had 3 ½ hours easy drive on good tarred road to get to the western entrance to Madikwe Game Reserve at Wonderboom gate. The friendly security guard at the gate greeted and welcomed me. After signing in, I entered the game reserve and enjoyed my own little game drive en route to my lodge where I would stay for a night. Ah! How nice it was to be back in the bush! Peace and quiet!

On arrival at the beautiful Impodimo Game Lodge, Steve, the owner, gave me a warm welcome, offering a cool cocktail to quench my thirst. The security guard at Wonderboom Gate communicated my arrival to Impodimo Lodge so Steve was at the entrance to lodge waiting for me when I arrived. My luggage was transferred to my luxury suite and Steve gave me a quick orientation tour of the lodge.

My late arrival meant I missed the afternoon game drive and sundowner drinks in the bush. All game lodges are booked on an all inclusive basis, including all meals, 2 game drives per day and some lodges include drinks. My pre dinner drinks were enjoyed on the balcony overlooking the open plains of woodland and grassland below. A popular waterhole near the lodge kept us entertained as game strolled in to drink. A delicious dinner was enjoyed in a traditional boma, our dinner tables placed around a roaring bon fire under the clear African sky.

The unfenced camp meant that I required an escort to my room by an armed game ranger. What luxury! I felt like a real lady! My luxury suite had its own private deck looking onto the open game area, a large colourful four-poster double bed draped with mosquito netting, a beautiful bathroom and a great outdoor shower.

An early morning wake up call had me jumping up in excitement. It had been years since I was last in the bushveld surrounded by game. I was looking forward to the open vehicle game drive. We enjoyed a hot cup of coffee and some delicious snacks before heading out on the drive. Roddy, our chatty game ranger ensured that we enjoyed a great gaming experience with spottings of lion, elephant, hyena, black rhino, black backed jackal and numerous very colourful birds species.

___________________________________________________________________
We returned to the lodge to enjoy a full buffet breakfast attractively arranged in the bar area at the swimming pool. As we sat down with our first serving, a small herd of elephants strolled up to the swimming pool just a few metres away from us and started drinking out of the pool. Wow! What an encounter! Who needs a game drive when you can sit in comfort at the lodge and watch the game come to you?

I decided to vary my stay in Madikwe by including 2 different lodges to stay at. After breakfast at Impodimo and a bit of time with the ellies, I then made my way to Mateya Lodge, a 5 star experience like no other! With immaculate attention to detail, the lodge is intricately designed, has magnificent arts and crafts from all over Africa and offers 6 star service! Exquisite!

On arrival I was welcomed with hot hand towels and an exotic cocktail, my hired car driven to the car park and my luggage carried to my suite. I was invited in for lunch on the deck overlooking open plains and a water hole where game roamed freely.

After lunch, I was lead along a raised wooden walkway to my private suite. It was more like a house! It was huge! The spacious, beautifully decorated bedroom opened up to my own private deck and plunge pool overlooking the open plains where the game roamed. The bathroom, almost the size of the bedroom, complete with all the luxuries fit for a queen!

After a quick nap in the comfort of my suite and a dip in my private plunge pool, I joined the rest of the guests at the lodge for high tea. Aware of the 5-course dinner that awaited us in the evening and having already enjoyed 2 large meals today, I struggled to taste some of the delicious looking snacks at high tea!  The atmosphere was ignited with excited chatter between the game ranger and the other guests.  Being foreigners they had not experienced the Africa wildlife before and were enthusiastic about the afternoon game drive, which would take place after high tea.

Equipped with binoculars, mammal and bird books and an experienced game ranger we set off in our open 4×4 safari vehicle for our afternoon drive through the reserve.  Our spottings were excellent and included sightings of lions, elephants, a leopard on a kill, a small family of bat eared foxes and hyena. My 300 zoom lens allowed some good close up photos. After the drive we all gathered for dinner on the deck and shared our excitement of our days sightings. The meal was exquisite and the company was fun, drinks flowed until late in the evening.

After a good night’s sleep I took some time to enjoy the luxuries of my suite. Top quality bath products in a steaming bubble bath had me lulled to a light sleep. A luxury skin lotion pampered my body and prepared me for a new day.

Breakfast was yet another magnificent display of good food, a huge selection of tasty things to choice from.

My time in the lap of luxury had come to an end. I had a plane to catch to get me back home by the evening. “Farewell until next time” I said!

Periyar National Park, land of diverse wildlife is located in the cardamom hills in Iduki district in South-East Kerala in proximity to Kalakad-Mundanthurai tiger reserve in Tamilnadu. Periyar meaning Big river is one of the oldest protected areas of Southern Ghats of India. It was declared as national part in 1982 and came under the ambit of project tiger in 1978. It’s a prime tiger land. The total area under the park is 777 Sq kms consisting of valleys, plains & wetlands. Its other name is Thekkady .The major attraction of the park is 26 Sq Km long lake formed due to the constriction of Mulla periyar Irrigation dam inundating forest land. This lake now is the primary water hole of the park & a boat ride in this lake is highly rewarding.

We arrived at Kumily after long journey but the tiredness of journey petered out by mere feeling to be in periyar tiger reserve. The starting point of park is about 6 kms from Kumily which can be approached by vehicle. We stayed in KTDC run periyar house near the entry point. A very significant thing came to my notice that since 2004, park is controlled by periyar foundation where park administration & local people work together for wildlife conservation.Such experiments are non-existent in India but in Africa such experiments are working successfully.Such experiments if extended to other parks, local people-wildlife conflicts would cease with the passage of time.

We decided to visit periyar river on boat. 26 sq km vast periyar river consists of small islets & creeks suitable as wildlife habitats. The boating in river is unique as it provides an opportunity to see vast variety of wildlife. The river is visited by herds of elephants, Cheetal, gaur & predators like wild dogs, tigers & leopards. The remains of trees provide a distinct look to the periyar river. Our journey was rewarded by varieties of birds, a herd of elephants, sambhar.

Next day we decided to go on nature walk allowed in periyar Tiger reserve.Though scary in tiger land but nature walk is very adventurous. We spotted numerous birds & butterflies. Periyar is home to more than 320 bird species & 160 species of butterflies. Trigger happy people (photographers) like me are rewarded beyond our imagination.

Periyar park is unique for various reasons/facilities namely:-walk in the wild, boating in periyar river, bamboo rafting, tribal heritage, tow bullock cart discoveries which are not available in other national parks.

Its unique location, available wildlife and unique facilities made it worth visiting part. Best time to visit the park is September—March.

How to reach:-

By Air:-Nearest Airport is Kochi about 290 Kms from Thekkady.

By Rail:- Nearest rail head is Kottayam about 119 Kms from Thekkady.

By Road:- Reach kottayam by rail then kanjirappally-Vandiperiyar-Kumily-Thekkady.

Those who have booked South India package tours are in for a treat if a trip to Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is on the itinerary. Located in Kumily, Kerala and set high in the ranges of the Western Ghats, nature lovers are going to be right at home at this beautiful sanctuary.

You will see many different varieties of animals including Elephants, Wild Pigs, Deer, Wild Dogs and occasionally you may be lucky enough to see a Tiger. There is also plenty of birdlife and pythons can often be found around the ground and sometimes even King Cobras.

At the heart of this stunning attraction is a picturesque lake where you will often spot animals drinking from the water’s edge. However, do be careful because after heavy rains chances of good wildlife sightings are very slim. The animals only tend to come to the lake when water sources inside the forest have dried up.

Boat cruises make the best option to check out the wildlife of Periyar Sanctuary. Although it’s unusual to see many animals from the boats, you are still likely to spot a family of elephants, wild boar and Sambar Deer by the water’s edge. The upper deck is best for wildlife viewing and it is recommended that you turn up half an hour early in order to get the best seats. If you prefer, you can even rent your own boat and explore at your own leisure.

There is plenty to do at Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary and the range of activities are so diverse that you will find something for everyone whilst on your South India package tour. You can explore Kerala’s beautiful Cardamom hills by jeep or taxi, go on wildlife, adventure and elephant safari tours, and travel to destinations such as Karnataka, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh.

The best time to visit Periyar Wildlife sanctuary is from the months of October and June and you can be rest assured that you are supporting a good cause. The Periyar Sanctuary supports natural projects and programmes started by the Indian Government. Project Tiger, Nature Camps and Jungle Lodges have been organised to promote wildlife awareness among people living in and travelling to India. The projects are designed to help preserve India’s natural heritage and to encourage eco-tourism.

For those going on South India package tours, a trip to Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary comes highly recommended as it is a thoroughly enjoyable day out.
