Toddler Costumes for a Great Halloween

Filed Under Fashion | Comments Off

Chad Hosrtman asked:

If you have a toddler and are wondering how you should dress them for Halloween, you will be pleasantly surprised to learn that you can find an array of different Halloween costumes that your toddlers will love to wear while trick or treating. In some cases, the toddler costumes are similar to the same ones that the older children wear only smaller.

The main thing to remember about Halloween is the temperature. In some parts of the country, it can be quite cold and rainy on trick and treating night, so you should ensure they are dressed warm. There is nothing worse than seeing a small princess standing and shivering while holding out her hand for a chocolate bar or Bam Bam standing there hoping for a candy bar when he is actually freezing.
___________________________________________________________________
You want to make sure that your toddler is comfortable at all times. Many times, they will wear the costume for hours and if they are uncomfortable, they will not enjoy Halloween at all. It may look really cute for your little girl to be wearing your high heels shoes with her fancy dress, however, think about her feet. After walking to a few houses, she will be ready to give up and go home, no matter how much she wants to keep trick or treating.

The best way to ensure that your child is comfortable is by purchasing costumes especially designed with toddlers in mind. Do not use your old clothes that are baggy, your shoes that are sure to cause them pain, and consider whether your child prefers to have their face painted or to wear a mask. Each child is different. Some **** the thought of a mask while others do not paint on their face.

For Halloween this year, the most popular toddler costumes for boys are Pickachu, Ash Ketchum, Spiderman, Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Bob the Builder, Lightning McQueen Pit Crew, Special Ranger, Handy Manny, Pilot, Sock Monkey, cowboy, Dash, Jungle Fury Red Ranger, Blue Ranger, Yellow Ranger, and Mickey Mouse. For girls the most popular are Jesse, Tinker Bell, Little Bo Peep, Ariel, Snow White Ballerina, Belle Ballerina, Aurora Ballerina, Belle Prestige, Minnie Mouse, and Tinkerbell Ballerina.

When choosing a Halloween costume for your toddler ensure you buy the proper size. If it is going to be cold, remember to purchase a size a bit larger so you can add other clothing under the costume, so your little one stays warm.

The most important thing to remember is you do not want the Halloween to constrict movement or obscure their vision. Carrying accessories along with their trick or treat bag may also be more than a little one can handle. If you are not going to be walking by their side then you may wish to forget the accessories that need to be carried. The number one rule is to have fun while ensuring their safety.

Have you ever wished for shepherding the jungle? Or enjoying a night camp in the forest? Or even peeping into the past of the forest inhabitants/tribes? If yes, plan a Kerala tour to Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. This thrilling destination grabs a position in the high ranges of the Western Ghats in Kerala. Known as the paradise of wildlife lovers in south India, Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary Thekkady, offers various species of flora and fauna, and the sporty elephants at the serene Periyar Lake.

Prominent Wild Species

Spread over an area of 777 sq. km. in the cardamom hills region of the Western Ghats, Periyar or Thekkady Wildlife Sanctuary is a home to about 62 species of mammals, 320 species of birds and 45 different species of reptiles. Apart from 40 tigers (approximately) and over 1000 elephants, the area is famous for gaur, sambar, barking deer, mouse deer, doles or Indian wild dog, nilgiri tahr, mongoose, leopard etc.

Reptile lovers often visit this place in the charm of various lizards, python and king cobra. Apart from that, bird species like cormorants, darters, kingfishers, Malabar hornbill, racket-tailed drongos etc. are popular among ornithologists or bird lovers.

Popular Activities

Covered with evergreen and semi-evergreen rain forests, the entire forest area is famous for its adventurous safaris. You can choose from boat safari along the Periyar Lake, jeep safari or elephant safari to explore the park/sanctuary. Periyar National Park, land of diverse wildlife is located in the cardamom hills in Iduki district in South-East Kerala in proximity to Kalakad-Mundanthurai tiger reserve in Tamilnadu. Periyar meaning Big river is one of the oldest protected areas of Southern Ghats of India. It was declared as national part in 1982 and came under the ambit of project tiger in 1978. It’s a prime tiger land. The total area under the park is 777 Sq kms consisting of valleys, plains & wetlands. Its other name is Thekkady .The major attraction of the park is 26 Sq Km long lake formed due to the constriction of Mulla periyar Irrigation dam inundating forest land. This lake now is the primary water hole of the park & a boat ride in this lake is highly rewarding.
___________________________________________________________________
We arrived at Kumily after long journey but the tiredness of journey petered out by mere feeling to be in periyar tiger reserve. The starting point of park is about 6 kms from Kumily which can be approached by vehicle. We stayed in KTDC run periyar house near the entry point. A very significant thing came to my notice that since 2004, park is controlled by periyar foundation where park administration & local people work together for wildlife conservation.Such experiments are non-existent in India but in Africa such experiments are working successfully.Such experiments if extended to other parks, local people-wildlife conflicts would cease with the passage of time.

We decided to visit periyar river on boat. 26 sq km vast periyar river consists of small islets & creeks suitable as wildlife habitats. The boating in river is unique as it provides an opportunity to see vast variety of wildlife. The river is visited by herds of elephants, Cheetal, gaur & predators like wild dogs, tigers & leopards. The remains of trees provide a distinct look to the periyar river. Our journey was rewarded by varieties of birds, a herd of elephants, sambhar.

Next day we decided to go on nature walk allowed in periyar Tiger reserve.Though scary in tiger land but nature walk is very adventurous. We spotted numerous birds & butterflies. Periyar is home to more than 320 bird species & 160 species of butterflies. Trigger happy people (photographers) like me are rewarded beyond our imagination.

Periyar park is unique for various reasons/facilities namely:-walk in the wild, boating in periyar river, bamboo rafting, tribal heritage, tow bullock cart discoveries which are not available in other national parks.

Its unique location, available wildlife and unique facilities made it worth visiting part. Best time to visit the park is September—March.

How to reach:-

By Air:-Nearest Airport is Kochi about 290 Kms from Thekkady.

By Rail:- Nearest rail head is Kottayam about 119 Kms from Thekkady.

By Road:- Reach kottayam by rail then kanjirappally-Vandiperiyar-Kumily-Thekkady.

Robert Griggs asked:

I think most ardent baseball fans knew that the media circus surrounding negotiations between Daisuke Matsuzaka and the Red Sox were going to be blown out of proportion. All the parties involved knew that too much was at stake for Matsuzaka to not be signed. Indeed, Matsuzaka has just agreed to a six year, $52 million deal with the Red Sox.

While some pundits may say that the Red Sox pulled one off against agent Scott Boras, that really isn’t the case. Boras was put in a no-win situation by representing Matsuzaka, as they basically had to take the Sox’s best offer, or Matsuzaka would’ve had to toil in Japan until the 2009 season (he wouldn’t have become a free agent until nearly midway through MLB’s 2008 season). But, Boras may have really hurt himself by taking too much time with Matsuzaka. Boras seemingly has spent little time working on the contracts of free agent pitchers Barry Zito and Jeff Weaver.

While Zito will have several suitors, a number of the teams interested in him, such as the Rangers and Cubs, have already spent significantly for other needs, and will now either be out of the running (Cubs) or not as interested as they were at first (Rangers). Meanwhile, Weaver, already a challenge to sell, has seen interest wane from his primary suitor, the Cardinals.

While those free agents will be monitored, several other moves were made in the past few days, including a notable trade. In response to losing pitcher Andy Pettitte, the Astros traded outfielder Willy Taveras and pitchers Taylor Buchholz and Jason Hirsh to the Rockies for pitcher Jason Jennings and a minor leaguer. Houston is going with a “win now” strategy, as Jennings will be a free agent after the 2007 season, but there should be money enough to sign Jennings if he likes his new surroundings. The trade overall favors the Rockies, as Buchholz is a lowball pitcher who had flashes of excellence last year and shouldn’t be as affected by the air in Colorado as most pitchers. Hirsh also was respectable in his starts for the Astros, so both have the tools to become mid-level starters—what Jennings is now. Taveras is maybe slightly better than league-average at center field, but he fills a need for the Rockies. The trade also makes shortstop to have been turned outfielder Clint Barmes expendable. Several teams are interested in acquiring Barmes in the hopes that his dismal 2006 is just a bad memory.

The Texas Rangers signed reliever Eric Gagne to a one year deal that, with incentives, could reach $6 million. The question is why? Akinori Otsuka was a fine closer last season, saving 32 games in 36 chances with an ERA of just over 2.00 as a closer. It is unknown whether Gagne or Otsuka will get the first opportunity to be the Rangers closer in 2007. I’d say right now, Otsuka is still the guy, especially since Gagne made few appearances last season. But if Otsuka stumbles the least bit, and Gagne’s healthy, don’t be surprised if the former top flight closer makes a return.

We’ve received word that the Blue Jays have offered outfielder Vernon Wells a seven year, $126 million extension before his “walk year” even begins. I have two words for Mr. Wells: take it. Wells is an excellent outfielder, but he’s a far more comfortable hitter at the Rogers Centre than he is on the road. He’ll also have free agent outfielders Andruw Jones and Jermaine Dye to compete with in next offseason’s market. Wells would have to match Alfonzo Soriano’s 2006 to get more than what the Blue Jays are offering him, so it’s in his best interest to now remain a Blue Jay.

There have also been a pair of whimsical pitcher signings, the first being the Royals inexplicably giving Gil Meche a five year deal worth $55 million. One should look past Meche’s 55-44 career record to note his terrible career ERA and the fact that he’s had one truly good season in his career. He’s also a high injury risk, and his record reflects that he’s been lucky to have a good offense supporting him. He won’t have that luxury for at least the next couple seasons in Kansas City, where he’ll be lucky to win more than 15 games over that two season stretch. I understand that Kansas City wants to turn things around, but it’s not going to be built around a pitcher like Meche. They would’ve been better off saving their money or at least putting the money in an everyday player instead of a middling starting pitcher.

Speaking of middling starting pitchers, the Cubs opened the pocketbooks again, this time to cut a three year, $21 million deal with Jason Marquis. Marquis was another pitcher who was embraced by lady luck last season, managing 14 wins despite an ERA of 6.02. Marquis has been terribly streaky over his career, and endured two long losing streaks during his tenure with the Cardinals. Marquis is a better pitcher than his 2006, but he’s been a bit hard headed his entire career, and if Leo Mazzone and Dave Duncan couldn’t get to him, I don’t see the Cubs coaching staff doing any better with him. One positive with Marquis is that he’s been solid at the plate, and can give a team a valuable pinch hitter late in long games. But that attribute alone isn’t worth $7 million a year. Overall, Marquis will deliver league-average or slightly below that in stats, and a middling record. He won’t be worth even this seemingly modest contract.

And since I’ve touched on a former Cardinals pitcher, it’s notable that the World Series champs have done little this offseason to fill the gaping holes in their pitching rotation. The Cardinals offered Jeff Suppan less money than the Cubs have given Jason Marquis, and the team is having problems in working out an agreement with Jeff Weaver. Barry Zito is not out of the team’s reach in budget, but the Cardinals have balked at offering “control” pitchers deals beyond three seasons. Unfortunately, the Cardinals philosophy reeks of making 2008 a rebuilding year. The team doesn’t have anyone in its minor league system ready to walk in and put up the numbers Suppan has for them over the past three seasons. In a couple seasons, the younger pitchers in the farm system may be ready, so it’s understandable that the team wouldn’t want to go four or five years on a #2 or #3 type pitcher, but I think they should make an exception with Suppan.

Should Suppan fetch $10 million plus per year? No. He never tossed a single complete game in his tenure with the Cardinals, and never quite pitched 200 innings in any of his seasons with St. Louis. If you average his 2006 numbers instead of looking at it by halves, Suppan actually averaged about what he actually did in 2004 and 2005. He was just a bit unlucky in the win department, and very lucky in the loss department. He’s the quintessential #3 guy in a rotation, a guy who generally gives his team six innings of 2-4 run ball while his gems outnumber his blowups by enough of a margin to put him modestly above league average. So he’s not a $10 million guy.

But he’s certainly worth more than the $7 million (or less, as reports indicate) per season for three seasons that the Cardinals have offered. Suppan does his homework and is a great guy for younger players to model themselves after. Suppan made every single one of his scheduled starts as a Cardinal, gave 5-8 solid innings in most of those starts, and hasn’t been on the disabled list since 1996. So, while I don’t believe the Cardinals should go crazy to keep Suppan, I think he’d stay if they made a good faith four year offer. The Cardinals would be hard pressed to find a better veteran starter for, say, a four year deal worth $32-36 million, but they certainly could do worse. So, I believe the Cardinals should make that type of offer to Suppan…then if he doesn’t accept, move on.

That’s all I have for now! For the latest developments in the baseball offseason, keep checking with us at To the Point and Back!

Wildlife photography refers to the popular idea of getting real animal photos in the wild, this kind of pictures are considered true art and only great pros can get to that accomplishment level. Wildlife photography has developed along with the evolution of digital camera technologies, and picturing animals in their natural habitat gives us a glimpse at their habits, helping people understand a the natural world.

There are some basic requirements for wildlife photography and they need to be taken care of before going on the field. First of all you must be able to expose well enough to create the effect of wildlife photo. You must have very good photographic equipment, though good pictures can be taken with a normal camera too. Depending on the situation various tools are needed since it is one thing to photo shoot ants and totally another to capture the image of a lion.

Any wildlife photography specialist will need good skills on the field and some knowledge about wildlife in general. Going in the wild is no easy thing, if you intend to take the challenge, plan everything carefully as wild animals are usually unpredictable. Cases of experimented explorers killed by animals are known and everyone has heard about the death of the Crocodile Hunter “Steve Irwin”. If you intend to photo shy animals you’ll have to find or ever build a hiding place from where to take the pictures.

Distance is the best safety element when dealing with large carnivores. Wildlife photography teaches you to be a patient person because nature has its own time you can neither slow it down nor speed it up. In the wild, nature rules, as you are the stranger and the intruder. Nature shows no mercy if you get wounded or something else happens to you, therefore, try to be aware of all the risks that wildlife photography exposes you to.

When involved in wildlife photography don’t get upset about some picture you’ve lost, always keep your eyes open for the next opportunity. You will have to be prepared because most of the picture opportunities are lost when the photograph isn’t ready. Be patient as patience means good pictures, and try to learn something in advance about the animal behavior in the wild. A guide who’d know the area well will surely teach you some further tricks and take you to the best spots for picture making.

Information About Rwanda Gorilla

Janice Sherwood asked:

After a night at Mt Gorilla Nest cease, it was a breaking daylight on the 15th Saturday of December when a Led a Gorilla tour of 4 people from Abacus African Vacations. A cold gentle snake blew over Ruhengeri city, facing the Virunga Volcanoes. It is here that the where chief Rwanda tourism offices are located so I handed in the Gorilla permits the group I led that was invented to chase Gorillas in Perc Des National Volcans. In our journey we were to Visit both Uganda and Rwanda Gorilla National Parks.

After interactions between the tourists, penalize issuing officers, determining who is in the right term for the most fractious trek and briefing about regulations from the steward guides, the long awaited adventure began.

Since we had opted to trek the Susa group which is termed the furthest family in Perc des National Volcans , which was termed the utmost and most tough to find, we felt the shower burden us a favour by making them quiescent.

We trekked through the thick vegetation, which the mizzle made rationally impassable. Several time the wet, slippery grassland saw many of the trackers slipping and sliding, with some property onto grass for care. After persevering for 6 hours, climbing numerous metres over 3500, the steward guides advised that we had to sit only to find that we were completely surrounded by the group. The rangers grunted to promise that the silverbacks were sociable and as a show of acknowledgement of friendliness, the silverbacks grunted in return. In make, the rangers were conversing with the gorillas. With gorillas session all around, and the babies wavering jokingly in’ the low plants and one lively baby property onto a tourist’s shoes, the one-hour scene of the wider nasal crack, broad chest, black unkempt coat with silverback males handsome a disparity, we were amazed. It was a greatly exhilarating experience and something I will memorize for the support of my life.

We later transferred to Gorilla route Camp in Bwindi where we experienced the Virungas in Uganda. Our tour guides briefed us about what we had to do the next day. The next morning, we assembled at the initial summit willing to go to pathway the Habinyanja Group. We started the walks but as others followed Wildlife rangers led the group as we began to sleeve down the toughen beaten trail on a very steep mount that was roofed with thick scrub, tall plants, and a few banana plants. A cloudy downpour the earlier night had left the course so slippery and most of the ladies were screaming for help as we were sliding and rolling on our bottoms down the steep slopes however it wasn’t charming sailing for the guys both, as one kept on falling when my climbing boots botched to pierce in the mud and sent me rambling down the rise. Sweating, swearing with groans of Fatigue, we lasting given the cheer of the anticipation of the now scary meet with the thug-Uganda’s most admired attraction!

An hour after the amble, we came across some mud and wattle houses surrounded by Banana gardens, pawpaw foliage and passion fruits plants. Women and children abandoned their chores and starred at us. Some of us talked to them as a few of them were yelling at the whites we were tracking with motto-Muzungu a Swahili word that means the pallid man. We were givens a five resume fracture before we proceeded which we worn to take water and take off jackets. . One of the guides Chris educated us that the hard part was yet to start from the stage where we were ranking so he advised that we had to proceed without out bags or any luggage we felt was gloomy to guarantee the verity that we were light. We reached a certain peninsula and the pilot told us that the gorillas had been there a few hours ago. He spoke on his Radio Call and spoke to his colleagues.

Faster we stirred only stopping to stop for those we had been waiting at that had relaxed to hold their breath. Closer the gorillas got as we could see a few of them sitting majestically and motionless in ranking twigs watching us. This was a pointer that our labors and determinations were about to pay off. We crossed a small brook in one lip. So exhausted and excited, we crouched down and crowled faster to the gorillas in a overall silence. Finally they came quicker in a round scene of Gorillas - over 20 of them, a psyche-boggling notion! Two silver-backs sitting next to one another at the rule of the group while other huddled together strictly behind in silent stares as our ranger grunted to make them move closer. The larger silver backs suddenly stood on fours and stiffened as one of the gorillas named Africa refused to sit with the group or even move with them. Eventually he left the shrub and sat in the conduit behind us. We stirred departure to let it seam the others but all in vain. He could move behind us and when we could stop, he could stop as well so the rangers told us that he was annoying to show the Silver backs that he too could start and he hunted to make definite that all was well. Nevertheless later he coupled his family. Four one hour, we watched infants singing on this mothers’ bellies as the juveniles were somersaulting. Finally, it time to retrace our paths back as we had three hours of climbing again……… Not even the drenching rain that poured central into our journey back could diminish our spirits. It was a recall I would never forget!

Rwanda has eight groups of gorillas. Each group has an accurate communal arrange based on age, showed by how a fresh one will stop out of an ingestion peak, playing hole or sleeping theme in. A particular zone for the elder. Five groups are the ones typically seen during trekking. These are identified differently according to the figures that constitute a group. Sabinyo group has 11, Sussa has 39 after the murder of a baby brute on January 12th, Amahoro has 14, Umubano has 8 and group number 13 includes 17gorillas. Though most period tourists wish to trail Susa because of its large heavy composition, Francis says figures do not mean a thing.

Each family of gorillas is local for demand; one group may have most jokey children or an easy to cooperate with silverback, another chief silverback among other behaviors that make tracking each group a private experience. Nevertheless, seeing a particular group very much depends on where it is that day as gorillas are forever on the move in hunt of food and safety.

By high value of their home, Francis added, gorillas do not ~ have many predators. Apart from the buffaloes, blonde monkeys and elephants that impart and live in synchronization with the gorillas in lower altitudes, gorillas live in cold conditions which other animals cannot stay, providing them a monopoly of the mountain areas. Francis explained that they are able to live in such cold conditions because of their black colour coloring. “The black colour helps to draw and ensnare section in the high altitudes of the mountains and at the same time makes gorillas fewer susceptible to section stroke as the devotion sunbathing. Gorillas in this state can live up to 45 time with the silverbacks weighing about 200kg and females between 80 to 120kg.”

The diet of mountain gorillas largely consists of bushes. The writers aim of receiving tangled in the bully tracking was also to lessons and analyse the diets of the Mountain thug and the constituents. She found out that Gorilla food constitutes of over 50 different plants, whose foliage, shoots and stems are eaten. For shoots, the gorillas help from generally the rainy spice mountain bamboos, when green and still tender, eaten with trocatea plants. The critic noticed that because the cane shoots are 84% water, the farther trocatea, tsile’s plants, celery’s stem without the hierarchy bark, little rattan foliage, stems, urela cameronesis’ foliage and stem bark, plants and roots, and dry flavor blackberries grown on high elevation, provides a nutritious delicacy. Plus the bark of eucalyptus leaves is also eaten especially by Ssusas of Rwanda, the principal heavy group, for curative purposes. The gentleman dominant gorilla also known as the silverback is particularly skilled in his learning of herbal plants and it is known that when one of his group members tumble sick, the silverback will regularly head the group to another sector of the park to find a particular herb and buoy the sick component of the group to eat it.

The writer learned that Eating also depends on the prevailing place in a group and the weather. Normally gorillas have three intervals of relax between each feeding, which amounts to 40% of their entire time per day. However, if they have migrated in a subject that has amply of food, they will feed and then lean for longer periods compared to period and passage into a sector of narrow food availability. In addition, if it’s raining strongly they become quiescent; active again when it stops.

After getting pleasure from the larking about of the children gorillas and the sheer dimension of the chap, with the one hour view obvious like 15 notes, we headed back down the mountain to a hot brown and a well-earned surplus.

After all, who knows when the travel bug may bite you next – and you find yourself in the middle of an adventure holiday destination with all the scope of putting together wildlife calendars, post-card materials and even the odd t-shirt print but for the want of matching photography techniques to capture the beauty of these wild beasts!

So, to avoid the disappointment of such a frustrating experience and to increase your scope for game-viewing and photography of a wild, untamed and thrilling outdoorsy moment made more memorable for the exciting natural backdrop it can be captured in, take a look at these exclusive wildlife photography tips – and you can bet your next camping trip won’t be the same again, what with so many types of photographs to click!!

There is no dearth of the type of outdoor photography you can aspire to choosing to do when out in the wilds: the range of natural, wildlife photography covers the varied purposes of professional photographers and even hobby photographers keen to commit to film and memory their tryst with the wild side of nature e.g. animals in their natural habitat. Some of the types of wildlife photography you can explore when out in the wilds, includes portraits (or head-shots) of animals, close-ups or zoom, focus of profiles, landscape and series photography (sort of like slow motion shots, very interesting, especially when you can capture one of the Big 5 moving in for the kill).

The greatest virtue that one needs to develop for perfecting the skills of outdoor, especially wildlife photography is patience; close on the heels of this is the need to work on using various kinds of photography equipment (e.g. light support, tripods, lens change etc.) while atop a tree/vantage point and also keep a cool head.

A very challenging and exciting vocation to choose, wildlife photography is fraught with dangers of being in the ***** outdoors with little more than a camera to shoot great moments and also risk being exposed to tropical diseases or unfriendly weather conditions if traveling beyond known territories of one’s homeland.

You will need to learn how to use a telephoto lens as many a time, an animal will not walk near you and in the beginner stages, a wildlife photographer needs to learn to be comfortable in natural surroundings and not simply be fool-hardy in approaching an animal straight off as this gesture may be misinterpreted as a threat and the animal may attack you.

A good way to start on wildlife photography career is to begin with the more accessible animals like bears, fox, elk, wild rabbits etc. while keeping a safe distance as you don’t want to scare them away and yet capture them in their natural habitat.

Try using a high speed digital camera so you can assess and store the best shots including the agility of an animal in the wild as well as not miss out on any actions since digicams come equipped with various easy-use features like auto-focus, red-eye elimination and extra zoom etc. and their quick shutter speed helps one to take multiple shots as the animal in focus moves.

Learn techniques like panning (following the territory of the animal’s range of movement) outdoor lighting and placement of photography equipment so you can get close and take personal shots of the animals without drawing attention to yourself and always respect jungle laws to stay safe in the wilds.

For an experienced photographer, there are so many things one would love to pass on to beginners to help them get started. Good lighting is essential. Timing and composition are subtle arts that come with lots of patience and experience. But what is the one golden rule of wildlife photography that one should learn above all else?

It’s all in the eyes.

Photographing wildlife is not the same as photographing a landscape or an inanimate object. Your wildlife subject has eyes, and our natural tendency as humans is to make eye contact. As a result, if you can capture the eyes effectively in a wildlife photograph, you have achieved the main ingredient of a great image.

Take a look at some of the great wildlife photography to be found in print and on the internet. You will notice that very often a picture only shows part of the animal, and perhaps much of what is visible is out of focus. The subject may be half-hidden behind a bush or lost in shadow.

Despite all these ‘problems’ the photos are successful. Who knows, maybe they have won an award or two. How can this be? Because the eyes are captured in a compelling way that creates a bond between the subject and the viewer.

What’s even more remarkable is that the subject does not have to be looking at the camera for the eyes to have impact on the picture. With our natural instinct to try to make eye contact, we are inclined to look first at the eyes of a subject and to follow its gaze. So if the subject is looking to the left, our eyes will tend to wander in that direction.

Imagine the power this can have in a composition. By using the position of the subject and the direction of its gaze, you can actually influence the way your viewer looks at your picture. For example, imagine a scene with a kangaroo and a striking tree in the background. Position yourself so the kangaroo is on the left and the tree is on the right. If you take your shot when the kangaroo is looking to the right (towards the tree), you will have created a composition that brings the two elements of the picture together. People will first notice the kangaroo, then follow its gaze to take a better look at the tree.

This is a great method of creating structure in your composition, but it also adds a little bit of pressure on you to get it right.

Two simple tips can help you make the most of the impact of the eyes in your wildlife photo. First, take your photo when the light is soft and even, to avoid lots of hard shadows across the face of the subject. This is a simple matter of shooting early or late in the day when the sun is low, or on cloudy days when shadows are not a problem.

Secondly, make sure the subject is facing toward the centre of the photo. Remember that just as the eyes can lead the viewer into the picture, they can also lead the viewer out of the picture. When your animal subject is on the right, try to catch it facing left (and vice-versa).

These are just simple guidelines. As in all nature photography, every rule is made to be broken. You will sometimes find situations where these tips just don’t work for your picture. You may even decide to break with convention from time to time, just to create a different kind of impact. However, even when you decide to try something different, never forget the power of the eyes in your wildlife photography. In most cases, it means the difference between a snapshot and something really special.
